UK Gambler Spent £33K on Scratchcards
Tuesday, 7.06.2011
Many people like to play scratchcards but some people clearly like to scratch much more than others. One specific man who could not get enough of scratchcards has a serious debt to prove it.
David Godfrey spent £200 each day buying scratchcards and saw little in return for the money he spent. The gambler had planned on repaying a debt he incurred on his American Express card worth £33,000 by using the money he received from an up and coming property sale.
The gambler found himself in debt after he lost his salesman job in April of 1998. He started going to shops and requesting £50 back on his credit card in which he would spend buying scratchers. Last summer, he took out £200 each day which he used to purchase scratchers. However, David Godfrey saw very few wins, especially considering the amount of money he was spending. Godfrey has said he earned about £10,000 more than he really did on his credit card application.
Godfrey has appeared in court for sentencing on a charge of obtaining services by deception, of which he had admitted in court. The gambler’s father owned a property which was up for sale; however, the value of that property would not even be enough to cover the amount of debt which Godfrey had incurred buying the scratchcards. The money from the sale of the property will be put toward the debt Godfrey owes on his American Express card. Godfrey has been granted bail and will be due back in court in one month.
